CHASING THE DRAGON-NOVEMBER 2017

BIRMINGHAM

As many of you know the opiate addiction crisis that we have here in the United States continues to grow at a rapid pace.  As one of the signature programs the Birmingham FBICAAA has adopted is Opiate Addiction.  Birmingham was the sight of the 3rd presentation so far of the Birmingham FBI, DEA in conjunction with the Birmingham FBICAAA of the free screening and panel discussion of CHASING THE DRAGON, THE LIFE OF AN OPIATE ADDICT.  Our goal is to raise awareness of drug abuse and the profound downward spiral that can be caused by opiate addiction not only to the person that is using the drugs, but to the affects it has on their family members, friends and their way of life.  We as a society can no longer turn our backs on this crisis.  I am sure each and every one of us has been affected by this in some way or knows someone who has been.  The panel included subject matter experts from the medical field, law enforcement, FBI and the community.  We have over 340 registered people who signed up to attend which about 150 people actually came to the event that night.  The public had the opportunity to ask questions in a wide range of areas pertaining to this crisis and received immediate answers to help them and give them guidance in dealing with perhaps their own personal struggles or those of loved ones.  Each registrant went home with a copy to learn more and share the film with their community and organizations.  A special thanks goes out to Fox 6 News, City of Birmingham and the Jefferson County Medical Society for their support in this event.  Beth Shelburne, the anchor for Fox 6 News moderated the panel and discussion.  As we move forward we as a membership must continue to spread the word to help bring an end to this crisis.  We will have our next viewing in Huntsville in the spring of 2018, so please look for that announcement and plan to attend.  Thank you also to our alumni members Audrey Vaughn, Melody Le, Deb Jaramillo for helping with registration as well as Paul Franklin for being our event photographer.
