Attendees at this year's Annual Meeting were treated to a special presentation by Michael Cuento, a Supervisory Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Agency. ASAC Cheryl Fletcher also addressed the group. Outgoing founding board members Dr. Sara Alvarez and Dr. Kingsley Sathiakumar were honored and new board members and officers were elected. Alumni and friends from Birmingham and Huntsville Citizens' Academies took the opportunity to honor Paul Daymond, FBI Community Outreach Specialist, for his unselfish service to our organization. The FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association sponsored a booth at the Alabama Be Ready Day held in Birmingham's Linn Park. FBICAAA alumni distributed Child ID Kits and information about internet safety to the thousands of children, teachers, and parents who attended the event. The FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association enjoyed a morning of camaraderie and fun at the FBI Building in Birmingham. Alumni from Birmingham and Huntsville were treated to expert guidance from FBI Firearms Instructor, Vicki Davis, and everyone got a chance to try their hand at the Firearms Training Simulator (FATS) machine under the watchful eyes of SAC Patrick Maley and ASAC Rob Haley! The FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association joined with the Birmingham International Center, the FBI, and the US Attorney's Office to present a screening of the movie, Not In our Town: Light In the Darkness, followed by a community discussion about stopping hatred and encouraging understanding. The FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association was proud to honor local fire fighters, law enforcement, and military service members at a ceremony in front of Birmingham City Hall. Following the ceremony, we attended a screening of the film, New York Says Thank You. The film was a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that joined Americans to each other on 9/11 and in the years since. Click here to view photos from the event. The featured speaker was a counterterrorism expert from the FBI Birmingham / Huntsville RA, who presented information about counterintelligence and protecting America's technology assets from foreign and domestic threats . The Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee (MCAC) of FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association enjoyed an evening at the Silver Coin Indian Grill on August 16th. U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance spoke to the group about Alabama's Immigration Bill and fielded questions about hate crimes prosecutions in our region. Click here to view photos from the event. The Citizens Academy Alumni Association partnered with the FBI on August 2, 2011 to distribute Child ID Kits and crime prevention materials at National Night Out. The first alumni Range Day took place on July 26, 2010, at the Jefferson County Sherriff's Office Firearms Training Facility in Fultondale, AL. A great time was had by all--despite the sweltering heat! Click here to view photos from the event.
Representatives from the Birmingham Chapter attended the joint FBI/FBICAAA National Leadership Congress in Kansas City. It was a wonderful conference with plenty of opportunitites for learning, networking, and service. Click here to view photos from the event.
The first alumni event to be held in Huntsville took place on June 10, 2010, where Citizens Academy alumni were held spellbound by the entertaining stories and true life experiences of retired FBI Special Agent, television personality, and bestselling author, Jack Owens. The FBICAAA sponsored a lecture by Mary Galligan, lead agent on the PENTTBOM investigation into terrorist attacks of Setpember 11, 2001. Galligan's lecture was attended by Citizens Academy alumni, retired agents, and law enforcement personnel. Click here to view photos from the event.
